Name: How to stop thinking about food all the time?
Dreaming about dinner with friends or imagining trying a new dish is normal. But if thoughts about food do not leave you around the clock and become obsessive, it is worth sorting out and getting out of this rut so as not to become obsessed with food.

Registered dietitian Mikel Kuinga speculates on why food obsession occurs and how it manifests itself.

If thoughts about food become all-consuming and take over you, if you can’t switch and you want to eat something all the time, this is a sign of an imbalance in your relationship with food. Your addiction speaks to it when you adjust your daily routine to meals, and thoughts about food influence your life choices. When you feel that food is the epicenter of your life and you do not control it, it controls you. There is a difference between the joy of eating and the inability to refuse it.

A focus on nutrition

Often people are in a relationship with food when they eat it to eat. That is, they perceive food only as a means to satisfy physiological needs and hunger, to nourish the body. Experience, awareness, and joy from the process are not in the “settings” of thoughts about food. But there is the obsession, planning and organizing meals, and constant focus on having the opportunity to eat.

With this way of thinking, you can carefully plan all your meals and reconsider your choices or actions depending on the conditions and the possibility of nutrition.

That is, thinking in an all-inclusive way means being overly focused on food choices.

Why is this a problem?

It would seem that what's wrong is to carefully monitor nutrition and make it a priority, supposedly taking care of your health and body. The problem with this kind of thinking is that it robs you of the enjoyment of food. Turns eating into a chore, a chore, something you must do to satisfy a mental need or goal you have set for yourself. Action from a constant feeling of "must". This can make you anxious, stressed, restless, guilty, or overwhelmed.

Thinking about food only as a means of physical nutrition creates a negative attitude towards it.

And constant thoughts about food are tiring. Exhausting to such an extent that in the end we can no longer do it.

When we reach a critical point, there is a "reversal" of consciousness, and we go in the opposite direction, and quickly change our way of thinking to "generalizing".

What is this way of thinking about food?

We are now describing a process, a cycle, when a person is thrown from one extreme to another.

When you constantly think about food, chances are you are in this cycle or have been in it before. You periodically burn out, can't do it anymore, and change course.

Now, instead of thinking about food as a means of physical nutrition, you decide not to think about its nutritional properties and effects on the body. You start eating chaotically mindlessly in order to get quick joy and satisfaction. Do not count portions and do not plan meals, but grab everything in a row, without evaluating the benefits/harms. And leads to excessive consumption of foods for pleasure and mindless or emotional overeating. And in the end, you feel depressed and guilty.

So why can a person constantly think about food?

Because in his mind, food is black and white. It is a stressor, a controlling factor in his life.

Either he is "good" and eats to get enough, or "bad" and eats for pleasure.

There is no middle ground.

How to develop a balanced relationship with food?
To stop thinking about food all the time, you need to develop a balanced, sustainable relationship with food.

A balanced relationship with food is one that combines the nutritional value of food with its enjoyment of it. And you know how to feed yourself to feel full and energized, and how to cook meals for joy and pleasure.

A relationship in which you enjoy life and still pay attention to food, but don't obsess.

Where to begin?

Of course, with the realization: what image of obsessive thoughts dominates you now? "Nourishing" or "Careless"? Do you constantly bother about how what and where to eat or eat everything, just to get satisfaction here and now? Are there certain situations, stressors, or triggers that make you act in one way or another?

Start with reflection and compassion. Once you recognize your tendencies, you can begin to change old habits and create new ones.

Gradually start practicing mindful eating: be present at your meal, feel its taste, texture, set the table and enjoy here and now. To, having enjoyed, “close” the topic until the next meal and go do other things without scrolling thoughts about food in my head.
